21st & 22nd May – Music Workshop & Choral Evensong

Various local singers enrolled for a choral workshop under the expert guidance of Laurence Cummings. With five hours of rehearsal on the Saturday and final rehearsal with an orchestra on the Sunday afternoon, the small parish church in the village of Tilford became the scene of a rare event – the complete ensemble of a choir and baroque orchestra, that would have had Johann Sebastien Bach himself feeling completely at ease, singing one of his cantatas (in German) on the set day in the Christian calendar.

This was musical fulfilment for all the participants, particularly the local choristers for whom the opportunity to sing such works is extremely infrequent.

An additional aspect of interest was that one of the professional soloists was the bass William Clements, son of the church warden Peter Clements, who was himself singing bass in the choir. The orchestra comprised players from the Royal Academy of Music playing authentic period instruments, including three natural trumpets.
